Notes from the meeting of the 15th of February 2018. The History Society enjoyed a very pleasant walk around Great How. En route we met a French holidaymaker who is trekking around Britain and then heading to Sweden. Having wished him 'Bon Voyage' we carried on and wandered up to both summits. Excellent photos, as always, from Neil Pritt have have already been posted. Fiona's photography skills are more variable - (that's putting it kindly!). Hey ho. A few are attached. If you haven't done so already then please email Trudy to let her know how you feel about this proposed Major Development in the middle of the Lake District National Park. Note from the meeting of Thursday 8th February. In addition to visiting the ring of seven beech trees, reputedly an area where there was cockfighting, members of the Thirlmere History Society walked up to 'road' to Fisher Crag. (The retrospective planning application for this 'upgrade' will be discussed on the 7th of March - at the same meeting that a decision on the zip wires will be made). Sorry to say that as we paused at the top we actually saw bits of the remaining earth/roots/soil around the edges of what was formerly this shepherd's hut fall off. ... See more

We will usually meet at Armboth car park, on the western side of Thirlmere, at 12 noon for the outdoor element of the meeting. We will then meet at Threlkeld Coffee shop at 3 pm for the indoor element of the meeting. You are very welcome to join us for either or both of the meetings. There are no membership fees and all are welcome. ... See more

Inside Out is doing a report on the zip wire proposals and asking the broader question. “Is Cumbria’s bid to become the Adventure Capital of the UK at odds with protecting the landscape ?” It will be screened on Monday 5th Feb at 7.30 on BBC 1 in both the North East & Cumbria and the North West regions. Whilst we were wandering up to Fisher Crag and discussing the fact that United Utilities' new road looks decidedly the worse for wear (after some winter weather and heavy rain) this was happening! We went for a nice hot choc at The Lodge in the Vale and discussed that next week we may go for a night walk. Will post up tomorrow with details. It's a blue moon next Weds so we may have a Weds evening walk up to the fort. ... See more

A CAMPAIGN is underway to raise funds for specialist oxygen masks to save the lives of animals caught up in fires.

Yorkshire Water leases eleven sections of moorland across the county for grouse shooting.

Breeding birds are being driven to local extinction by grouse moor management practices conducted on Yorkshire Water's watch and wildlife is being killed by trap, snare and gun.

Will you join us on Saturday from 12 noon in Norfolk Gardens, Bradford, to urge Yorkshire Water to pull the plug on grouse shooting?
